Pilgrim Pitter Patter Platter

A Happy Thanksgiving to ya!

Sighted this morning: a 7 pound Burmese cat very much in awe of turkey twice his size.

Ya gotta wait, Val. Gotta cook it first.

I’m thankful for a wonderful daughter, my health, and a whole lot more. Hope you all have lots of Turkey (or your fave) and fixins. Oh, and fun! Don’t ever forget that.

Wireless Everything

A little checklist for 10 years down the road …

I’ve been thinking lately that I would really like to cut down on some of the noise and complexity of the computers in my study and throughout my house. I could get a lot done on my 17″ PowerBook, especially with video out to a 21″ monitor.

That lead me to the thought of “hmm, will I wear out my video and firewire connectors if I am constantly shuttling my PowerBook around?”

Which lead me to the thought:

I really want wireless everything. Wireless external drives. Wireless video. Then I won’t have to wonder about wearing out connectors. I’ve been dealing with cables since 1979, and it does get old. Generations of multi-colored spaghetti.

This is obviously wishlist stuff. It’ll happen, so it’s more of a “when?” than an “if”.

Oh, and wireless power would be nice too, as long as we’re in wishlist mode. Ever been to a conference where half the people in a room are hunting for a powerstrip? Maybe it won’t be necessary. Maybe batteries will get so good that laptops will last all week on a charge. I notice a baby step in this direction …

I wonder how far off this stuff is. 10 years?

Update! Hey … maybe this is closer than I thought

Congrats Snapper!

A hearty congratulations to my wife Susan Price!

Susan just won an award for Architecture Photographer of the Year – Interiors, from International Photography Awards. The photo will be part of the IPA book coming out early next year. Susan and I will have the photo up on our website(s) soon.

You can vote for Susan’s photo for a Peoples’ Choice Award (I may update this bit here with a direct link to the photo – need to find Susan in NYC first :-)

oh, and the legs visible in the photo belong to none other than our very own Sophia – so congrats Sophia on your part in this!

Forever JFK

I was nearly 3 when JFK was shot 40 years ago. I remember my father glued to our black and white TV, capturing audio of the funeral procession to his reel to reel tape recorder.

What a time. After the missile crisis. Civil Rights legislation on the way. A period of low unemployment. A president with ideals. Before the escalation of Vietnam. First forays into space. Yeah, it wasn’t all roses then, but compared to now …

Looking back, I salute JFK. I didn’t know it then, of course, but we really lost something when he was taken from us. So few have come close to filling those shoes ever since.

Minor FlexiPhoto Update Coming

First off, I want to say thanks to the folks that have taken a look at the FlexiPhoto preview. If you would like to see what I have so far, and try it out for yourself, email me, and I will send you a login and password.

I’ll be updating the preview version soon. There is “get” functionality, which lets you embed photos in arbitrary web pages that come from FlexiPhoto. The photos can have arbitrary scaling and compression. FlexiPhoto caches the scaled/compressed versions.

I want to get the source out there, as I’ve written before. Just wondering which license to use.

Bowie’s Reality

Just a quickie to say that NYC resident David Bowie has put out a great CD entitled “Reality”. Catch his London Concert on DirecTV this month if you can.

It’s all too easy to rant about some LCD no-talent making the news. I’d rather crank up a new Bowie, rock along, and get on with it.

Thanks David Bowie, for getting older without going into boredom rehash-land!

Five Nil

EPL. London. Wish I could have been there.

Chelsea Millionaires. SW6. Five Nil over Newcastle at Stamford Bridge! Take a long walk, or short taxi, down Fulham Road to Riccardos for some excellent Italian food after that one in The Capital, eh?

What an absolute trouncing!

I don’t think I have blogged much about The Beautiful Game, but I do try to follow my personal EPL top four: Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United (see, this is an advantage of being a Yank, is that I don’t have to pick one team). I do like Newcastle a lot, but can’t say I was surprised to see such a rout. Alan Shearer and Bellamy were sorely missed.

Not sure why J.S. Veron is still a starter. Anyone? Wayward shots a specialty. Did that with Man Utd as well.

Very impressed with the 19 year old Johnson and Mutu. Missed the always amusing facial expressions (usually of disbelief over some referee call) of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

Go Chelsea. Go Aresenal. Go Liverpool. Go Manchester United.

Get Me Back There, Get Me A License

Or, New York With A Drawal …

Gosh, I’ve been away from here, but I haven’t gone anywhere at all.

I have some of my usual routine back. Loud Music and Coffee. I am definitely going through a post-NYC withdrawal. The energy level here in Petaluma is akin to the slow bits of Dave Grohl’s/Foo Fighters “How I Miss You”.

The point today, aside from writing “no, I didn’t forget my blog”, is this:

I want to figure out which Open Source License to use for FlexiPhoto

The basic constraints are that I want to control what gets called FlexiPhoto, I want to be able to do consulting on my own project (and have others feel free to do the same), and I want the source out there. FlexiPhoto is a non-trivial project, so I am taking some care to get this bit right.

Got any suggestions?

And my other point today is that I am looking to open up the FlexiPhoto preview, but I am not keen on having random strangers posting iffy stuff (so I need to have some sort of basic authentication).
