I want to confirm people&#8217;s fears about walking around in NYC.  It *is* a dangerous place, full of careening taxis, enormous potholes, steep subway stairs, metal strips poking from curbs, and it requires all manner of pedestrian avoidance techniques.

Lincoln Center is a fine place to hang out by the fountain and check out all of the comings and goings.  A little oasis of open space in the midst of Busy Broadway.  There are some very severe looking apartment buildings across the street.
