Second Life Portfolio (In Progress)
[this is a dump of text from some SL notecards.. much editing to do.... making it public (which will speed me up :) -- I will be adding pictures and video over time... ]
Introduction
I am a longtime web & application developer, and have been in Second Life since Spring 2006 honing my virtual worlds skills. My desire is to be able to work in SL (or other Virtual Worlds) and the Web. This page details some of my activities in Scripting, Building, and Island/Event Management.

Introduction
My scripted objects have been in use in SL for over two years. One of the primary themes is to do the best I can with the limited dialog functionality provided by the scripting language, LSL. I also have experimented a lot with gatewaying data to/from the web, and have done a lot of work with per-person video objects (which gets around the ‘one video per parcel’ restriction)
- BuckyRadio 2.8.1 - sets internet audio streams for parcels. Features multi page station browsing via dialog, as well as chat commands (such as seach).
- SimpleSlider - display a slideshow of textures with one overall notecard. Extensive control of foreground and background sizes, opacity, etc, on a per-slide basis.
- Slider - display a slideshow (a la SimpleSlider) and give out items on a per-texture basis: web address, notecard, texture, object, and landmark.
- TpFromDescription - a point to point intrasim teleporter. Destination is specified in the object description as absolute (i.e. 128,128.33) or relative (i.e. +z3 -y3) coordinates - a custom version of this can be found in the China Cafe (Info International) and in the Bell Towers (Info Island)
- TPMap - an interactive map with buttons for each destination in a sim. Clicking a button gives a marker on the map which can be used for transport.
- VideoPoster - display a video (defined in the object description). Per-person.
- VidMon - per person video with menus (each person can see a different video on the same screen at the same time)
- WebMon 2.52 - dialog and chat enabled selection of web pages to invoke in an external browser. Configuration allows many (~50) pages. This is used extensively on Info Island (and elsewhere in the archipelago) in many of the libraries for subject-specific web pages.
experiments / not current:
- ImageMap - the imagemap / statemap project enables a clickable surface, where prims are bound to commands (offer a tp, rez an object, display a message, invoke a web page, etc). It is analogous to an imagemap on a web page, but in 3D.
- RSS Browser (LLDialog) - much like WebMon, but enables the browsing of RSS feeds first, followed by selection of articles. This calls a php-based parser (magpie) that I wrote a wrapper for.
- RSS Reader (Quicktime - 2007) this calls a php app to get the names of feeds, article titles, or individual article descriptions. I generate SMIL on the fly. An in-world screen is overlaid with transparent prims, which allows me to generate parameters to pass to the web side. This predated web on a prim by a year. The approach I would use now is to simply overlay transparent prims (for interaction) on a web enabled prim.
- Texture Chooser - enables rapid texture change of entire classes of prims in an objects (all walls, floors, windows, etc.). The user selects a surface, and then is able to update texture, offset, alpha, color, and other attributes. Dialog and chat interfacess
Introduction
I am a stronger scripter than builder (my programming endeavors go back to the early 1980’s). However, I have done a number of projects that take advantage of the virtual environment (buildings you fly into) or that blend landscape and structure (Investing Infoisland). Most of the building projects I have been involved with in the Info Island Archipelago have been in collaboration with Abbey Zenith.
- Investing Infoisland - Spring 2008
- Terraforming, Design, Path/Roadways, Detail work - This was a major project done with a team of 4 for FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority). My cohort Abbey and I were responsible for the look of the entire island (a 50’s/60’s motif — roadtrip through hills and camp)
- Info International
- Welcome Area, Terraforming and Pathways, Fusion Stage
* Bell Library - this is an 11 story library tower on Info Island. It was designed to be accessible, and easy to get around in. The tech it uses is low lag, but powerful. (can fly into any floor, or click on an entryway to gain access — also features floor to floor teleporters, without using 11 * 11 scripts) The design parameters were: * easy to fly into * modern/futuristic * bright/warm * provide enough space for ~10 different library collection types
past:
* Vendor Village - this is an extensive half Sim build of vendor buildings (in this case, entities that sell to RL libraries). The directive was to do something futuristic. There are 16 buildings which use my texture chooser, have a built in TP system, and which feature usable loft and roof space. I did extensive terraforming work to create a rolling hillside campus.
- * Info Island Art Gallery - the main art gallery for Info Island.
- The three story structure blends indoor/outdoor design, and has hosted 4 shows thus far. It features a deep basement with ample wall space, and intuitive one touch teleports.
- * Galleria Della Luna - this is my personal gallery on Info Island II. It features pieces from my photography show, and has a rooftop park.
- * Cybrary City Conference Stages & Podiums - these can be found in the main conference center
Introduction This covers a couple of management duties I have on Info Island Info Island Curator
I am Co-Curator (along with Abbey Zenith) of the Info Island Library Gallery. I work with the artists to provide extensive technical and creative help (scripting show programs, frames, layout, piece selection, scheduling). I built the original gallery for my own show, and then revised it for the following shows:
* Alan Ceres -
Improvscapes - Color, Space, Land, and Jazz January 6th through February 12th, 2007
* Kriss Lehmann - In My Place February 23rd through March 23rd - original run currently extended with Dakota Buck until April 22
Next up: * Daruma Picnic - (show title forthcoming) April 28 through May 20, 2007 See the contents of the portfolio object for show programs.
Info Island Estate Steward I am also one of a dozen or so stewards that have Estate Manager access on Info Island and others across the archipelago. This gives me a lot of flexibilty to address parcel, terraforming / building, and other island administrative issues.
